Translation of the Sermons for Lepers and Other Sick People by Jacques of Vitry (1165/1170-1240)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Since the 12th century, an increasing number of texts of different genres began to appear in the medieval West written by authors who contributed to defining and establishing an ideology that highlighted the place of the leper in the plan of Christian salvation. Jacques de Vitry (1165/1170-1240), prolific medieval writer and famous preacher of the crusades, expressed various elements of such ideology. This article presents the Spanish translation of two of his sermons to lepers and other sick people from the Latin edition, thus facilitating access to this text, which, among many aspects, it is useful for understanding the symbolic dimension that the sick body and illness had in the medieval world, as well as their place within the social body of the Church.
